The Master of the Masterpiece
Friends, today’s reading from Wisdom 13:1–9 speaks about a mistake many people have made throughout history: admiring the beauty of creation but forgetting the One who created it. The writer says people look at the sun, the moon, the stars, the oceans and all the powerful forces of nature, yet fail to say, “There must be a God behind this.” They forget that behind every masterpiece is a Master, behind every design is a Designer, behind every created thing is the Creator. He calls them foolish, not because they are evil, but because creation itself already points clearly to God. The beauty and greatness of the world should naturally lead us to its Author.
This reading reminds us that the things God created are meant to guide us back to Him, not take His place. There is nothing wrong with admiring nature or appreciating its beauty. But when people stop at creation and refuse to look beyond it, they miss the whole point. Today, many still fall into this trap. Some place their faith in the universe, in “energy,” in stars and zodiac signs, or in ancestors and elements. Others place their trust entirely in human achievements, success, money, popularity, or even their own strength. These things can easily become modern idols without us realising it.
His Masterpiece
The truth is that God has never hidden Himself. His fingerprints are everywhere: in the order of the universe, in the rhythm of the seasons, in the way every creature has a purpose, and even in the breath inside us. If we truly open our eyes, creation becomes like a big sign pointing to God. The problem is not that God is far; sometimes our hearts are simply too crowded with lesser things.
Today’s reading challenges us to look at our own lives. What are the “created things” we may have unknowingly placed above God? Is it work? Money? People’s approval? Our dreams? Our phones and social media? Even good things can distract us when they take God’s place in our hearts. When our hearts are full of other things, the Creator becomes blurry.
But creation was never meant to replace God. It was meant to remind us of Him. If a beautiful painting impresses us, how much more the Painter? If we admire the works of God, how much more should we seek God Himself?
Today, take a moment to look around, look at the sky, the trees, the wind, the water, even your own breathing. Everything silently whispers, “God is near.” Let creation bring you back to the Creator.
The God who designed the universe is the same God designing your life. He knows what He is doing. He orders all things well, even the things you don’t understand yet. Let creation draw you back to Him, not away from Him.
Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes to see You in all things.
Let creation lead me back to You, not away from You.
Where my heart has chased lesser gods, draw me gently back to the Source of all beauty. Teach me to admire Your works but worship only You. And may my life reflect the wisdom of knowing the Creator above all created things. Amen.
