The Divinity of Christ!
Today our reflection takes a more theological tone as we explore the divinity of Christ through the lens of St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians. This passage is one of the clearest affirmations of the mystery of the Hypostatic Union: that Jesus Christ is both fully human and fully divine.
At first glance, some statements of Paul might seem to suggest otherwise. For example, when he writes: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Col. 1:15), certain groups (like the Jehovah’s Witnesses) argue that this means Christ was created, and therefore not equal to God.
But a deeper look shows the opposite. Paul continues:
“All things were created through him and for him… He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:16–17).
This means Christ is not part of creation, He is the uncreated Creator.
Nothing existed before Him.
All things find their origin, purpose, and unity in Him. Far from denying His divinity, Paul is affirming it.
Jesus is truly God.
So, how can this knowledge help us?
Certainly it’s important to know the truth behind our belief. So to know this truth deepens our faith and teaches us to place our trust more firmly in Jesus, who is both close to us in our humanity and powerful to save us in His divinity.
It reminds us that when we look to Christ, we see the face of the Father, and in following Him we walk in truth and life. It also equips us to defend our faith when challenged, and it strengthens our hope, because if He holds all things together, then our lives are safe in His hands.
Jesus is Lord!
Jesus is King !
